What are the sleeping arrangements?
While camping you will probably be sharing a roomy tent with one or two other guests (either your friends or guests of the same sex), with plenty of room to store your bag. You will each have your own air mattress with fresh sheets and blankets.

Couples will be given their own full size mattress in their own tent so they get some privacy. Families will be either be given a large tent they can all fit in, or two tents; one for the parents and one for the kids. Please tell us any sleeping preferences when you book.

What if I’ve never camped before?
You will love it! We have had first time campers who arrived with some doubts, but after about the second night they didn’t want to go home! As cheesy as it sounds, there is no way better way to get back to nature. The tents and beds are super comfortable too. And the best part is the sound of the waves.

What if I’ve never surfed before?
That’s great. Our instructors have taught hundreds of surf lessons to people who had never touched a board before. The waves are gentle and long which is perfect for any level of surf student.
What kind of facilities (bathrooms, showers, communication, etc…) are there?
Fifty yards from our camp is a quirky desert outhouse with a nice view of cacti. This is convenient and Rick’s bathroom of choice! If you want some running water there is an actual bathroom 3 minutes walk from camp with sinks, cold showers and flushing toilets. Near the bathrooms there is a special hot shower available for our guests to use once a day.

There is also a cantina which serves up good Mexican food and is a popular place to hang out, have a beer, and meet some other traveling surfers. The cantina is at the top of a small hill, a few minutes walk from the camp, and always seems to have a nice cool breeze blowing. We’ll eat there a few times during the week. They also have internet access which is slow, unreliable and expensive, so we recommend walking 10 minutes to one of the internet cafes in town.

In town there is a phone which can be used to make outgoing calls to the U.S. for $1.40/minute, and other countries for a bit more.

What are the meals like?
Pia is master chef! Guests often enjoy lending a hand in the preparation or clean-up of meals. In addition to Pia's cooking we will also be enjoying some of the authentic local cuisine at the cantina and in Loreto. Breakfast is normally hot and cold cereals, toast, honey, coffee, tea and juice. Pancakes, eggs, bacon, fresh tortillas and salsa are also common. Lunches consist of sandwiches (e.g. tuna, cheese, ham, peanut butter, salami), quesadillas, tacos, salad, fresh fruit, etc.

Dinner consists of a variety of dishes including local fish, fresh beef and chicken, beans, tortillas, rice, curry, pasta, stir-fries, and campfire baked potatoes. Fresh fruits and vegetables are served throughout. Healthy Snacks such as fruits and nuts will be provided throughout the day. Note: if you or your kids have other types of favorite snacks, including energy bars, we recommend bringing some with you. Vegetarians will be well catered for. Guests should indicate their requirements at the time of booking.

Can I be contacted at the camp?
There is no phone to receive calls at the camp. There are internet cafes in town (a 10 minute walk) where you can check your messages for a couple bucks. There is a phone to make outgoing calls in town. It costs $1.40/min. to call the U.S.

Will the waves be crowded? Are there other people there?
The point is a popular destination in summertime so there will likely be other campers there. The people who are attracted to this spot are usually mellow and friendly. Good people to run into at the cantina. Also it’s fun to be in such a remote place with other like-minded adventurers.

The variety of points and the length of the waves mean that a lot of people can get their fill of waves at once. For our lessons we always seek out an uncrowded part of the wave, or an uncrowded point.

Is this trip good for families?
Yes, this trip is GREAT for families. The waves here are unique in that surfers of all levels and sizes can surf side by side. We have had many parents comment on this, enjoying not only seeing their kids get amazingly long rides, but even sharing the same wave as their kids. Also, there is a large sandy beach which makes for a great playground. There are usually other families camping, so the kids can make friends.

What if I have special dietary needs?
We like to be as accommodating as we can. Please let us know well ahead of time if this is the case.

How’s the weather?
In Baja you can expect days in the 75° F (24° C) – 90° F (32° C) range with nights dropping down to about 65° F (18° C). There is a strong warm offshore wind that blows through the middle of the day and usually calms down in the evening. Mornings can sometimes be cool and foggy until the offshore wind starts around 10 a.m.

It’s usually sunny in Baja so bring a strong sunscreen to avoid sunburn. Rain is rare but possible.

How’s the water?
The water temperature will be about 70° F (21° C) -- 75° F (24° C), which means that wetsuits are generally not necessary. However, the temperature does fluctuate depending on the wind. Occasionally a strong offshore wind produces upwelling, bringing cooler water to the surface. We recommend bringing a springsuit (short arms and legs) or a long sleeve neoprene shirt to wear while surfing.

How big are the groups you take?
We operate our trips with a maximum of 8 guests. We like to keep the groups small and intimate.

Is there an age limit?
All ages are welcome. This spot is a favorite for families because of the friendly waves, the facilities and the big sandy beach. Guests under 18 years old must be accompanied by a parent, except by special permission.

What if I have a friend/partner who doesn’t surf but wants to come?
If there are less active partners who still want to join the fun but don’t want to surf they are welcome to join us at the Desert & Sea Package rate. Please ask for further details.

What about drinking water?
During the trip we are always equipped with 7-gallon jugs of purified water. Guests should bring one water bottle to fill for their personal daily drinking.

Are gratuities included?
Gratuities for the hotel, meals and services which are included in the trip price will be paid by New Wave Trip. Should you wish to tip New Wave Trip guides, this gratuity is entirely at your discretion. The standard in the industry ranges from $7 to $15 per person, per guide, per day.

What if I want my own tent/hotel room?
For those guests who prefer not to share, we can offer single accommodation in their own tent and their own hotel room. The single supplement is $150.

What boards should I bring?
If you’re still learning, we’ll provide a soft board for you. Other surfers should bring 1-2 boards. If you longboard we recommend bringing a 9'0" and a shorter fun board around 7’6”. If you shortboard we recommend bringing your 6’2” and a fish or fun board.

Note: The longest board you are supposed to fly with is 9’ packed (though we have had many guests fly with a 9'6" without a problem). We have 9’4” foam longboards available for use. These are good boards for foamies (not flimsy).

How can I pay?
Payments can be made by check or credit card (Visa, MC, AMEX, Discover). Please make checks payable to New Wave Trip. Credit card payments can be made over the phone and have an additional 3% surcharge.
